Ronchi ruling resolution scales (EMS)
A Ronchi ruling or Ronchi grating, named after the Italian physicist Vasco Ronchi, is a constant-interval bar and space square wave optical target that has a high edge definition and contrast ratio. Ronchi rulings are commonly manufactured through photolithographic deposition of chrome on glass or optical substrates. Ronchi rulings are used for optical testing purposes, e.g., the Ronchi test and as scales for a linear encoder.
Chrome deposited on B270 Glass 50mm x 50mm - 1.5mm thick Ruled over full area Line width / Space width = 0.250mm ±0.003mm. Overall error over 50mm = 0.010mm Glass size 50mm x 1.5mm all ±0.2mm.
