Sodium meta-bisulphite reagent aqueous solution
This solution is prepared from A.C.S. Reagent grade sodium bisulphite.
Available in 1%. 3% and 5%.
It is also a powerful reducing agent that is used to remove chlorine and chloramines from water. It emits sulfur dioxide, a strong, unpleasant-smelling gas that can cause breathing problems in some people. It functions as a steriliser, antioxidant, and preservative.
The solution is made by dissolving solid SODIUM METABISULFITE into water and has a pH of 4.6 at 1.0 % (by weight) solution strength. Because the SMBS solution is not stable to air and reacts with both oxygen and chlorine, it is recommended that batches of less than 2% by weight be used within 3 to 7 days and batch solutions less than 10% be used within 7 to 14 days.
Stain used for:
- Jones Method for Kidney, Silver Method for the staining of basement membranes, reticulum fibres, collagen, and nuclei.
- Periodic Acid Leucofuchsin Method (PAS) for General tissue stain
Store at room temperature
