Maleic acid, also called cis-butenedioic acid, is a dicarboxylic acid with the chemical formula HO₂CCH=CHCO₂H. It is the cis isomer of butenedioic acid, indicating that the two carboxyl groups are positioned on the same side of the double bond. Maleic acid is a colourless crystalline solid with a slight odor and is soluble in water. It is used in various applications, including dyeing and finishing textiles, as well as a preservative for fats and oils.
