Lowicryl K11M embedding kit (DG)

Lowicryl resins are highly cross-linked methacrylate embedding media designed for a wide range of embedding applications. Once cured to the appropriate hardness, they can be sectioned with ease using either glass or diamond knives.

These resins are polymerized under ultraviolet light at a wavelength of 360 nm. Because polymerization initiation is largely independent of temperature, blocks can be cured at the same temperatures used during infiltration. Alternatively, the resin can be polymerized chemically at 60 °C. The K11M kit is hydrophilic and suitable for use at temperatures as low as –60 °C.

The hydrophilic properties of  K11M provide two distinct advantages. 

• During dehydration and infiltration, specimens can remain somewhat hydrated.
• Better structural preservation and improved preservation of antigenicity make K11M particularly useful for immunolabelling of sections.

As with other polar (water-miscible) resins, it is essential to keep the block face dry during sectioning. Sections should be collected immediately after cutting, and staining incubations should be kept as brief as possible. Optimal results are readily achieved using uranyl acetate and Reynold’s lead citrate.
